Background

Raising children in 20/21st century is no easy task. Back in Victorian times phrases such as 'children should be seen and not heard' and 'speak when you’re spoken' to were supposedly used to great effect to help children get a sense of where they fit in society. By the end of the 20th century a much more liberal and indulgent attitude to children had developed but rather than help children integrate better many believe it has only confused and caused children to question and resist authority. In the Spring 2010 edition of Family, Cathy Madavan writes on the importance of boundaries and finding the middle ground between authoritarian and permissive styles of parenting.
